Good preparation makes everything easier right? Hopefully this list will help you prepare for your photo shoot and make everything run as smoothly as possible.

Talk to your kids (and partner) before the shoot

It’s important to prepare them to have their photos taken, tell them where it’s going to be and why you’re having family photos. Make sure they know what to expect, how they’re expected to behave and what you want them to wear (to avoid arguments on the morning of). Also let them know what they’re going to get if you plan on bribing them.

Look at my work

Have a quick look at my work together with your family so everyone knows what to expect. It’s awkward when you arrive and your partner thinks you’re having traditional family photos…then I ask you all to hop on the bed and cuddle. Looking at my photos together prepares you all for the relaxed and fun nature of our shoot together.

Plan your outfits

Think coordination not matching. Casual not stuffy. Simple not distracting. Wear clothes that you look good in and that you can have fun in. There is more to it so we wrote another post with all the nitty gritty.

Try to get some sleep

Ok, I know this can be hard, especially if you have small kids, but try get some sleep. Don’t have a big night before your shoot, stay in and go to bed early. You don’t want to be looking exhausted and you don’t want to be dealing with over tired kids during your shoot.

Eat something

Hungry people are grumpy people. You want to look happy in your photos and enjoy the whole experience, so make sure you’re all well fed and watered before your shoot.

Go with the flow

If you’re expecting perfection from this whole experience you’ll be disappointed. Your kids aren’t going to be perfect, so just let them be kids, have fun with them and enjoy being together. Let go, have fun and your photos will be the perfect reflection of your family.
